Solo will release tomorrow, says Bejoy Nambiar

Bejoy’s clarification comes even as the powerful Tamil Film Producers Council announced that no new films would release from this Friday

Director Bejoy Nambiar has announced that his film, Solo, featuring Dulquer Salman in the lead, will release in Tamil tomorrow as originally planned.

The director took to Twitter to issue the clarification after confusion prevailed over the fate of films scheduled to release this week as a result of an announcement by the Tamil Film Producers Council yesterday. The Tamil Film Producers Council, in a statement, had announced that no new films would release from this Friday. This was to protest against the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to impose an LBET (Local Body Entertainment Tax) of 10 per cent on Tamil films over and above the GST of 28 per cent.

The decision of the government to impose the Entertainment Tax in addition to the GST has not gone down well with various segments of the film industry.

Already, to protest this additional tax in the form of LBET, some multiplexes that are members of the Multiplex Association of India have announced that they will not be screening films. Inox and PVR are two such multiplexes that have cancelled shows in the city. The other multiplexes and exhibitors are having a meeting to discuss their future course of action.

Around nine films including Bejoy Nambiar’s Solo and Meera Kathiravan’s Vizhithiru were originally scheduled to release this week. After the Producer Council’s announcement, the general perception was that the release of all the films would be delayed.

However, director Bejoy Nambiar took to Twitter to announce that his film Solo, featuring Dulquer Salman in the lead, would release in Tamil tomorrow, that is October 5. He tweeted, “WE ARE RELEASING in TAMIL ! #SOLOsolovaVarudhu #SOLOfromOct5.”

It remains to be seen if the other producers who had films lined up for release this week follow suit. How the Tamil Film Producers Council will react to this decision of the director will also be watched with interest.
