Director Jacob Chase comes up with an intense, gripping thriller that has you biting your nails and screaming in fear for the most part.

Synopsis:
Gemma (Amelia Eve) is a young single mother, who lives with her daughter in the very house she grew up in. A dentist by profession, Gemma has no major concerns. Life at this point is pleasant for Gemma, who is dating a cop. Her boyfriend seems to be really interested in her but she hasn’t reached a stage where she is ready to introduce her child to him.

It is under these circumstances that Gemma notices three old weird lookingindividuals moving into her neighbourhood. Soon, she starts having nightmares and at one point, begins to realise that these aren’t nightmares and that she is someone who has the power to travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe.

Gemma is warned that a great dark power had sensed her abilities to be a courier — meaning she could be used to transport evil spirits from the Further to the real world — and that he was now coming after her for this purpose.

Determined to fight off the evil force, Gemma embarks on a plan to safeguard herself. In the process, she realises that her mother too had this ability and had sacrificed herself to protect her.

If her mother had the ability to be a traveller and a courier and she too had the same ability, it would mean her daughter too would have the ability. And the dark forces would have also realised this!

Gemma’s focus now changes from safeguarding herself to saving her daughter. How she does it is what the film is all about…

Analysis
Jacob Chase’s story telling is gripping and the casting is perfect. As a result, the story has you hooked to the screen. Fine performances from all the actors make this film an engaging thriller. But it is Amelia Eve as Gemma who steals the spotlight. She delivers an outstanding performance that lends credibility to the plot and draws you into the story. She is well supported by Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye, who appears as a good soul looking to guide Gemma.

The narration of this horror thriller is so good that it gives you the exact answers to questions that may arise in your mind as the story progresses. In fact, full marks to director Jacob Chase for preempting questions that may arise in the minds of the audiences and for structuring the narration in such a way that it answers all those queries, correctly and in a timely fashion.

Recommendation:
Insidious is a well made, intense horror thriller that is bound to leave you spooked. If you are someone who loves serious horror thrillers, then this is a film you cannot miss. Strongly recommended for lovers of horror thrillers.
