‘DC’ is without doubt Arun Matheswaran’s finest film until this point in his career. True, it is a gangster drama that has quite a lot of blood being spilled, but then, this is also a film with a soul and a beautiful one at that. It is a far cry from his earlier films and the change seems clearly for the better.
The film works because of four factors.
Factor 1: The plot
The first is the plot which is neither exaggerated nor artificial. “If one can’t fight for the education of a poor boy, then what else will you fight for?,” asks Devadas to his companion Kitty (Avinash Raghudevan) right at the start of a film. That one statement convinces you that Devadas has a cause worthy enough to pick a fight. The justification for violence becomes valid and even before you realise it, Arun Matheswaran successfully gets you on his side, rooting for the protagonist.
Factor 2: Lokesh Kanakaraj.
Damn! is what you first mutter to yourself when you see Lokesh Kanakaraj transform into the fearless Devadas on screen. The man is a natural and he easily slips into the character of Devadas like a fish takes to water. In fact,he owns the character and delivers such a powerful performance that you find it hard not to admire Devadas. He has swag and it floors you. Easily one of the biggest factors for the success of this film.
Factor 3: Anirudh’s background score!
Anirudh just seems to have poured his creativity into the background score of this film. The skinny musician seems to have set his soul free while scoring music for this one and it seems like the soul of his music and the the soul of the story complement each other so beautifully that you actually feel they are one and the same. The music is just perfect for every occasion from start to finish. And boy, does it make it a delight to watch the proceedings unfold even as his music plays in the background! The background score is beautiful and apt. It works too ways. It enhances the emotion on screen when it is a romantic or emotional moment but it limits or reduces the impact when there is a scene of violence. Fantastic!
Factor 4:
Three other actors who add immense value to the plot of the film are the two leading ladies of the film — Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra and Sanjana A K as Parvathi– and Krish Dayal as Bhojraj, the ruthless cop determined to hunt Devadas and his accomplices down. Each one of these actors deserves an entire review for their performances in this film. They were all that good.
GK Prasanna’s editing also deserves to be mentioned at this point. Full marks to the editor, not a single minute of the film was boring. The editing was tight and the story, gripping. Brilliant work that needs to be recognised.
On the whole, this is a film that is definitely worth your time and money. Way to go, Arun Matheswaran!
