Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is far from your regular commercial film. Director Ram attempts to tell a story that goes beyond the conventional ideas of love and relationships, touching upon kindness, humanity and the enduring nature of human connections. The film has some genuinely noteworthy points to make, and there is an undeniable ambition behind its storytelling.
However, the film’s biggest strength also becomes its biggest drawback. The story and its narration are highly abstract, making it difficult for the common viewer to follow and emotionally connect with.
Told in a non-linear fashion, the narrative demands considerable attention from the audience. The fact that some of the characters experience rebirth and exist across thousands of years adds another layer of complexity, making the proceedings even harder to relate to on a conventional, human level.
This is not a film that spoon-feeds its audience. It expects viewers to engage with its ideas and interpret what they see rather than simply follow a straightforward narrative. While that approach may appeal to audiences who enjoy experimental and philosophical cinema, those looking for a commercial entertainer that offers an easy escape from their daily worries may not find Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai particularly appealing.
The performances provide some much-needed grounding. Nivin Pauly and Anjali deliver fine performances, bringing sincerity and emotional depth to their respective characters. Soori, however, struggles to fit into the film’s unusual world. His performance often comes across as artificial and somewhat out of place, which takes away from the overall impact of his portions.
Ultimately, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is an ambitious and unconventional film with some interesting ideas about love and kindness. But its abstract storytelling, non-linear structure and fantastical elements make it a challenging watch. It is certainly not a film for everyone—and viewers approaching it as a conventional entertainer may find themselves struggling to connect with it.
