Director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi’s ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai’ is literally what the title says it is.
The film’s story revolves around two individuals Shreya (Nithya Menen) and Siddharth (Ravi Mohan), whose first romantic relationships have left a deep scar on both of them and have shaken their trust in the opposite gender.
Did I say two individuals? Actually, make that one. Although the film appears like its story revolves around two individuals, it actually revolves around only one person and that is Shreya.
To be fair, Siddharth, despite having been left high and dry on his wedding day by his would-be bride, is forgiving and accomodative. So, saying his trust in the opposite gender has been shaken would be incorrect.
Shreya, on the other hand, is “done with men” as she declares. Her boyfriend cheats with her best friend, making her end the relationship. Over time, she longs for a child after seeing one of her relatives have a baby. She applies her mind (and a great deal at that) to deduce the immensely difficult fact that she can have a child without having a man in her life! The effort she puts into the process of making this deduction is so convincing that you almost feel like crying ‘Bravo’ by the time she figures it out! The next logical step would be to kick the man out of the family equation which is what she does.
After all, why would any independent, empowered woman such as herself need a man? So, there you have it, a single working woman having her child.
Meanwhile, Siddharth, who isn’t particularly interested in getting married or having kids, is ready to get into a relationship after having been humiliated thoroughly on his wedding night. He immediately falls for Shreya, whose brilliant presentation he happens to chance upon, leaves him awe-struck and pining for her. However, the mismatch in their priorities makes Shreya decide that she wants to stay single and have her child. What happens eight years later when the two meet again is what the film is all about.
Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi dares to touch upon topics that have been seldom touched. She asks questions that have been rarely asked. But beyond all this, it is the manner in which she deals with all of these that makes Kadhalikka Neramillai what it is. She actually skims through these topics thereby making it a light-hearted film, more than anything else.
Performances:
Ravi is just brilliant as Siddharth. An actor with immense talent and discipline, one gets the impression that he is yet to actually get a role that truly allows him to showcase his actual potential.
Nithya Menen as Shreya is perfect. One department that Kiruthiga has scored handsomely is casting. She has the right people for the right characters. Be it Vinay Rai, who plays a gay person, or Yogi Babu, who plays the relatively conservative man in the group of male friends or T J Bhanu, who plays Siddharth’s ex-girlfriend, all of them suit their characters to the T.
Verdict:
Kadhalikka Neramillai is actually a film with several layers. For those who have the patience and the skill to see through the layers, the film can offer several significant ideas. For others, this will come across as a light-hearted romantic drama.
