Director S U Arun Kumar comes up with a brilliant action thriller in his Veera Dheera Sooran, a film that will stand out for its story telling as much as it will for its outstanding performances.
The film’s gripping plot and brisk, intense developments keep you hooked to the screen from the minute it begins. There is not a scene in the film that you can term as unnecessary or boring as each scene is linked to the next like a beautiful string of pearls.
Synopsis:
The story begins with a middle aged woman, along with her young daughter, making her way to the home of a powerful family in search of her missing husband. She demands to know what has happened of him and refuses to leave the place until she sees him. The family members are in no mood to entertain her and tell her that they have nothing to do with her husband’s disappearance. After a point, the woman is thrashed and thrown out. She heads to the cops to complain against the ‘Periyavar’ (the Elder’s family). The cops are reluctant to file a case as they know he is an influential person.
Sometime later, her husband turns up at the police station, claiming his wife has gone missing. The cops as always are reluctant to file a case until the Superintendent of Police (S J Suryah) arrives on the scene.
The police officer, who is looking to settle old scores with the Periyavar and his son (Suraj Venjaramoodu), decides to use the man’s complaint of his missing wife as a reason to eliminate both father and son. What happens then is what the film is all about…
The film is based on a real life story. Arunkumar’s writing beautifully uncovers the grey shades in each human’s heart. There are no pretensions and no efforts are made to showcase one character as being superior to another. Each character, with all its flaws and strengths, is presented as it is. The story has you watching it with bated breath as the wickedness of each individual makes you tremble in fear. Every character in this gripping plot has an agenda and is willing to backstab or sacrifice someone else’s interest to protect their own. The story has ruthless and manipulative individuals on two sides trying to take out each other using one powerful but relatively straightforward guy who cares for only the safety and well being of his family.
Vikram as Kaali is brilliant. To those outside his family, he appears majestic, towering and fearless and to those in his family, he is caring and gentle. Only an actor of Vikram’s calibre could have handled such a difficult character to portray so elegantly and efficiently. The swift manner in which Vikram shows the character’s nature changing is just adorable.
The same can be said of actor SJ Suryah who does an outstanding job as the Superintendent of police. Suraj Venjaramoodu as the son of the Periyavar shows his class. He plays the role of the incredibly wicked but occasionally intelligent brash son with panache.
Theni Eswar’s visuals and G V Prakash’s music are both apt and outstanding.
In all, Veera Dheera Sooran has class written all over it. It is a film that commands your time, money and respect. A must watch film!
