Director Sundar C, a master craftsman when it comes to delivering commercial entertainers, has once again whipped up a film that has all the ingredients of a mainstream entertainer. Mookuthi Amman 2 is packaged with fantasy, humour, romance and loads of action, and is likely to find favour particularly with audiences in B and C centres.
One of the film’s biggest strengths is its computer graphics work, which seems to have worked big time. The CG sequences add considerable visual appeal to the proceedings and help bring the fantasy elements convincingly to life. While the humour portions work only in parts, the conflict between the divine and the dark makes for fairly engrossing viewing. This aspect of the film, in particular, is likely to appeal to those who are devout.
Nayanthara, as Mookuthi Amman, puts up a neat performance. However, it is Regina Cassandra, who plays the antagonist, who steals the thunder with an impressive outing. Garuda Ram’s performance lends credibility to the plot, while Kannada star Duniya Vijay makes his presence felt as a prince consumed by his desire to claim the throne.
Hip Hop Tamizha’s background score is another positive. The music is apt and effectively amplifies the emotions being showcased on screen, adding to the impact of several sequences.
On the whole, Mookuthi Amman 2 is a film that is completely different in approach from its predecessor, Mookuthi Amman. Sundar C has opted for a more elaborate fantasy-driven commercial entertainer, offering a generous mix of humour, romance, action and the supernatural. While it may not work uniformly in every department, it has enough to keep its intended audience entertained. A good one-time watch!
