Constitute CMB, Close Sterlite, says Tamil film industry in one voice

The Tamil film industry made a strong statement on Sunday with its silent protest which was called to support the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and the closure of the Sterlite Copper Plant in Tuticorin.

Several top stars took part in this protest including Superstar Rajinikanth and Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan.

The protest, called by the Tamil film industry’s three most powerful bodies– the Tamil Film Producers Council, the South Indian Artistes Association or Nadigar Sangam and the Film Employees Federation of South India, began at 10 am in Valluvar Kottam and came to an end at 1.00 pm.

The place was crammed with people as fans and public thronged the venue, either in support of the cause or to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.

Those who participated in the protest included actors Sathyaraj, Vishal, Dhanush, S J Suryah, Vijay, Sivakarthikeyan, Vimal, Suriya, Parthiepan, Sivakumar, Vikram, lyricist Vairamuthu, music director Ilaiyaraaja and actress Dhansikaa.

FEFSI president R K Selvamani said that four resolutions had been adopted at the protest and these included a resolution urging the government not to do anything that affected the basic necessities of the people. Two other important resolutions adopted at the rally pertained to the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and the closure of the Sterlite copper plant.
