HC stays cases against Vairamuthu for his comment on Andal

Justice M S Ramesh, who granted the stay this afternoon, observed that prima facie, no case had been made out against the lyricist.

The Madras High Court has granted an interim stay on the cases that have been filed against seven-time National Award winning lyricist Vairamuthu in connection with his comment on the Hindu saint, Andal.

Justice M S Ramesh, who granted the stay this afternoon, observed that prima facie, no case had been made out against the lyricist.

The stay was granted on a plea filed by Vairamuthu, urging the court to dismiss the cases against him.

It may be recalled that a number of complaints had been lodged against Vairamuthu for reportedly referring to Andal, a Hindu saint, as a devadasi.

The outrage over his comments have been so forceful that the Lyrcist has not only expressed regret, if they have hurt the feelings of some, but has also put out two clarifications to put an end to the controversy.

However, despite all these efforts, the controversy only continues to rage on with several Hindu outfits staging protests all over Tamil Nadu on the one hand and several writers, thinkers and leaders of Dravidian organisations coming out in support of Vairamuthu on the other.
