Director Santhosh P Jayakumar, who is known for having made adult comedies like ‘Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu’, ‘Hara Hara Mahadevaki’ and ‘Irandam Kuthu’, has broken out of the mould and now made a clean, engaging entertainer that can be enjoyed with the whole family.

‘Poikkal Kuthirai’ is a good entertainer that revolves around the love a dad has for his daughter. The film, which is high on drama and action, also qualifies to be called a neat investigative thriller.

The story in short…
Kathiravan (Prabhu Deva), a doting dad who has lost one of his legs in an accident, has only one dream and that is to provide his young daughter Magizh (Baby Aazhiya) a good education as per his late wife’s wish.

All that Kathiravan cares about is the welfare of his young daughter. His world revolves around her. It is under these circumstances, that one day, Kathiravan gets to know that his daughter has a medical condition and that only a surgery can save her. Unable to procure the funds required for the surgery, Kathiravan is driven to desperation.

It is at this time that his dad (Prakash Raj), who is in prison serving a sentence, gives him a dangerous suggestion. Prakash Raj suggests that he kidnap Shwetha, the kid of a wealthy business magnet Rudra(Varalaxmi Sarathkumar), and demand a huge ransom. Kathiravan hesitates at first but then, decides to embark on the mission to save his dying child. What happens next is what the film is all about…

‘Poikkal Kuthirai’ starts off as an emotional drama and then soon changes colour into a gripping, intense investigative thriller.

Prabhu Deva, who plays the one-legged Kathiravan, does an outstanding job. The actor had to fold one of his legs while shooting the entire film, as camouflaging a leg with green matte didn’t seem to work.

Prabhu Deva seems to have done justice to the role. He dances with grace, and fights with passion, all on one leg! A commendable feat indeed!

Baby Aazhiya, who plays Prabhu Deva’s daughter in the film, delivers a fantastic performance. The child wins your heart with her innocence.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar too delivers an impressive performance.John Kokken as Varalaxmi’s husband and comedian Jegan deliver neat performances.

Santhosh P Jayakumar reiterates with ‘Poikkal Kuthirai’ that he is capable of making neat clean, entertaining family entertainers. What is interesting is, the manner in he has ended the film, gives him the scope for having a sequel to it.

On the whole, ‘Poikkal Kuthirai’ might have its share of problems but it comes across as a neat, engaging family entertainer.
