Review: Emakku Thozhil Romance

Balaji Kesavan’s story isn’t new. It’s an age-old plot that has been done to death but then, the manner in which the story is narrated is what saves the day for both the director and his film.

Director Balaji Kesavan comes up with a decent comedy entertainer in Emakku Thozhil Romance, featuring actors Ashok Selvan and Avantika Mishra in the lead. Balaji Kesavan’s story isn’t new. It’s an age-old plot that has been done to death but then, the manner in which the story is narrated is what saves the day for both the director and his film.

The film is about Uma(Ashok Selvan), an assistant director who is looking to direct his own film in the near future. Uma falls in love with a nurse (Avantika Mishra), who initially has second thoughts about falling in love but eventually she does give in. All seems to be going well until the time Uma chooses to help a friend who is looking to get an abortion without her family’s knowledge. The move leads to a lot of misunderstandings. What happens then is what the film is all about.

Emakku Thozhil Romance, to be fair, is an enjoyable film. The film has a shaky start but ten minutes into the film, it turns enjoyable because of one factor and one factor only – comedy.

The film has a big list of comedians – all of whom contribute handsomely to the film’s success. In addition, the film has a comical sequence that reminds one of a real-life situation. The comical sequence has director Balaji Tharaneedharan boasting about his just released film and his ability to understand the audience’s mindset. However, his film flops miserably. It flops so badly that it invites the wrath of the fans of the film’s hero! No marks for guessing which film this sequence reminds one of!

The humour is organic and there are no below the belt jokes. You start laughing even without realising it and by the time, the interval arrives, you begin to realise that the film is not half as bad as you thought it would be when it began.

Ashok Selvan seems to have played this role quite effortlessly. The man is made for such light-hearted entertainers and somewhere, it brings out the best in him.

Avantika Mishra, who is new to Tamil cinema, does a fine job as well. At no point do you find it difficult to accept her as a Tamilian girl. She gets into the skin of her character and slowly but surely owns the part.

Balaji Tharaneetharan as an overconfident director is cute and adds immense value to the film.

Bagavathi Perumal (Baks) again establishes how good a comedian he is with this film. His role is limited but it adds immense value to the humour quotient of this film. Excellent work!

Badava Gopi and M S Baskar also chip in with valuable cameos.

Nivas K Prasanna’s music is just about alright and Ganesh Chandra’s visuals are a treat.

In all, Emakku Thozhil Romance is a feel-good, light-hearted entertainer that makes up for its lack of message and content with humour. This one won’t impress you but it won’t disappoint you either!
