S P Jhananthan admitted to hospital

Well known director SP Jhananathan, who is known for his National award winning film Iyarkai apart from films like Ee, Peraanmai and Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai, has been admitted to the Apollo Hospitals in a critical condition.

Sources close to the director say that he was editing a film yesterday and had left for lunch. However, as he did not return even after 3.30 pm, his assistants went to check on him and found him lying in an unconscious state in his home. He was rushed to a hospital in Alwarpet from where he was later shifted to the Apollo Hospitals.

The director is believed to have suffered a serious nervous breakdown and senior neurologists have been summoned to treat him.

S P Jananathan, who is a bachelor, is known to be a philanthropist. Not many know that he has silently been sponsoring the education of a number of his relatives’ children.

The director, who maintains a low profile, is also known for his down-to-earth attitude and his strong leanings towards the idealogies of the left.

Late last night, directors Karu Pazhaniappan, Ameer and actor Vijay Sethupathi visited the director at the hospital. However, they were not let in as he is in the ICU.

Vijay Sethupathi alone was let in to meet him for a few minutes.

A senior neurologist is expected to examine Jhananthan this morning.
