Rajinikanth congratulates Mersal team

Superstar Rajinikanth, on Sunday, broke his silence on the raging controversy over the BJP’s demand for removal of some dialogues from the recently released Vijay-starrer Mersal, by softly congratulating the makers of the film.

Rajini took to Twitter to congratulate the unit of Mersal. In a carefully worded tweet, he said, “Important topic addressed… Well done !!! Congratulations team #Mersal”

Interestingly, Rajini chose to break his silence on the issue only after several people asked why the Superstar was keeping quiet when the BJP’s demand for the removal of some dialogues in the film had triggered a huge controversy. The general view among the masses is that the BJP’s demand for the removal of certain dialogues that criticise demonetisation and GST goes against the right to freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the constitution.

Although Rajini, in his tweet, congratulated the team for an ‘important topic’, he was careful not to point out which topic he was referring to. It may be recalled that the BJP has taken exception to dialogues on GST and Digital India in the film and has sought the removal of dialogues pertaining to both topics.

While Rajini’s tweet delighted fans who wasted no time in answering critics who had lashed out at him for his silence, those who had raised questions about why the Superstar had not reacted to the controversy, said that Rajini’s reaction was too little, too late.
