SC grants relief to Internet sensation Priya Prakash Varrier

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted temporary relief to Internet sensation, actress Priya Prakash Varrier, by staying all criminal proceedings against her in different states.

The Supreme Court, while ordering notices to all the states where the cases have been filed, restrained the states from initiating any criminal action against the actress and the film’s director and producer till further hearing.

Priya, who shot to fame because of her expressions in a song titled Manikya Malaraya Poovi…from the under production Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love, found herself in the eye of a storm as some groups claimed that the song offended the sentiments of a minority community.

They filed four complaints in two states — Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. An FIR too was lodged against the actress and the filmmakers.

Priya and the filmmakers filed a plea in the Supreme Court, praying for the quashing of the FIR lodged against them.
