TN Theatre strike to end soon?

If all goes well, the strike by theatre owners is likely to come to an end by tonight or by Friday at the most

If the hints being dropped by those in the industry are anything to go by, then, one can safely expect the theatre shutdown that is currently on in the state to come to an end, either by tonight or by Friday at the most.

Soon after Rajinikanth made an appeal to the State Government to seriously consider the plea of the film industry to drop the 30 per cent Entertainment Tax being imposed on films, over and above the GST, postive news started trickling in.

A few hours later, Abirami Ramanathan, one of the office bearers of the Theatre owners association, while participating in a digital meet organised by Lyca, said, “God willing, there will be good news by tomorrow or by Friday morning.”

He wasn’t the only one giving out positive signs. Tiruppur Subramanian, one of the state’s veteran film distributors, too said that the delegation from the film industry which met the Chief Minister had given him an assurance that theatre owners would ensure that there were no irregularities if they were allowed to raise ticket prices nominally. Also, he said that theatres would issue tickets containing all the details including the amount being paid under GST to customers.

The distributor claimed that the Chief Minister had replied that, ‘When the film industry is willing to do so much, we too will stand by you.’

But the best news came from Producer Raju Mahalingam, who is producing a number of Tamil films at the moment.

He said that members of the delegation who met the CM had assured him that a solution was likely to be found by tonight hopefully.
